The Pear

If you've visited this blog before, you've heard mention of Bryan’s burgeoning woodworking hobby (specifically here and here.) Over the past year or so, he’s been slowly acquiring all the necessary tools (lathe, band saw, planes, etc…) and a scarily enormous stack of wood is piling up in the garage ready to be formed into multiple masterpieces … not that there’s any time to actually cultivate the hobby, but when there is by god, he’ll be ready.

We had big plans to make this a handmade Christmas of sorts by crafting a single, special item for each person on our list (i.e. a bowl or tray) and ultimately decided on a pear modeled after a glass one we already own. (Let’s be clear here, I was just helping with the design, all of the actual work was Bryan’s domain.)

But as always in our house, aspirations outweighed available time, and it took three full months of stolen moments to create a single pear. It was determined that the pear would be gifted to Bryan’s mother since it was created from the Siberian elm cut from his parent’s yard -- and there's the fact that she gave birth to him and raised him and all…

It’s pretty, yes? Truth be told I’m massively proud of him.
